Meditation and Releasing Stress
Meditation aids us in connecting with who we truly are and find a deep contentment that leads us to accept life as it is without clinging to desires or fears of change. It helps us to find our own inner balance and peace in which we can experience daily happiness; a state of being that is our birthright.
We tend to get caught up in our daily stresses or unresolved stresses, which lowers our immune system and makes us vulnerable to more stresses; we are then governed by mood swings, discontent, anxiety and/or lethargy. Meditating 15 minutes twice daily will help to lessen the effects and affects of the stressors in our daily life because it mentally releases stress and physically relaxes the muscles. If we hold a lot of tension in our muscles it makes us feel uncomfortable, increasing the effects of mental stress, which in turn effects our sleep patterns. Poor sleep produces more muscle tension, which then produces more mental stress.
One of the ways to stop this cycle is to find yourself a quiet place, where you won’t be disturbed. Wear loose clothing and make yourself comfortable. Begin by slowly breathing in and as you are breathing in focus on tightening all the muscles in your body; then as you slowly breath out release and relax your muscles. Do this three times; then turn your focus onto your breath. Imagine that the air you are breathing in, is pure white light and with each out breath that you are releasing all the stress and tension from your body. Visualise the white light that you are breathing enter your nostrils and fill your lungs. Feel your lungs become relaxed and your breathing become deeper. As you continue to breathe in the white light it flows from your lungs into your heart, creating a more harmonious and rhythmic heartbeat. Imagine your heartbeat pushing the white light, you are breathing, into your circulatory system; as your circulatory system becomes filled with the white light it begins to penetrate all systems of your body, starting with your toes and feet. Imagine that the white light saturates the bones, tendons and muscles of your toes, feet, ankles and calves; and that every where the light goes becomes soft and relaxed. Continue breathing in the white light and breathing out all stress and tension as you focus on moving up your body, saturating each body part with white light; your knees, thighs, hips, hip joint, intestines. Imagine that the white light travels up your spine saturating it and then fans across your back, around to your front, filling every muscle, tendon and bone, as well as all your internal organs; your whole torso is now saturated with the white light you are breathing and has become soft and relaxed. With your next breath send the white light across your shoulders and down your arms, filling them with the white light and allowing the light to ease away all the tightness and relax your shoulders, arms, hands and fingers completely. Feel the white light move up into your neck, saturating it and easing away all tightness; then like small firm fingers of light it massages all the tension from your scalp, forehead, cheekbones and jaw. Saturating your head, brain and face with harmonising white light energy and then fills your throat. Your whole body is now totally saturated with the white light and relaxed; notice that you are now both breathing in and breathing out white light. Imagine the light that you are breathing out forms a soft, nurturing cloud of light around you, and allow yourself to relax into this gently floating, cloud of light. Feel yourself become centred and at peace, drawing these gentle balanced energies into your body and being, you allow yourself to bring them with you into full consciousness, become aware of your physical surroundings, feeling yourself fully aligned with your physical body and at peace. Wiggle your fingers and toes; when you are ready open your eyes.
It is a good idea to record this meditation so that it is easier for you to master this technique. After you have done it a few times, it will become easier and quicker to do.
